About Us

Harcourt Chambers, founded in 2008, is a set of barristers’ chambers situate between Central and Admiralty stations.

It houses a diverse group of barristers, from criminal defence to civil disputes, from formal court litigation to arbitration and mediation, from commercial litigation to judicial review, and with a wide range of practice areas such as matrimonial law, construction, personal injuries, banking, insurance, etc.

Beginning with only four members, Harcourt Chambers has grown over the past decade into a medium set of around twenty members.

From Litigation to Alternative Dispute Resolutions

Our members accept instructions for a wide range of work, from civil to criminal, advocacy to drafting, litigation to alternative dispute resolutions. Some members of Harcourt Chambers are professionally qualified mediators and arbitrators.

Mini-pupillage & Pupillage

Mini-pupillage

Students (whether or not studying a law degree) who wish to see the life of a practising barrister and to learn more about the profession may apply to become a mini-pupil. It usually lasts for at least 2 weeks during which students may read through case papers, conduct research, complete simple tasks or, if opportunity allows, attend court hearings. Mini-pupillage with a newly-called barrister and an experienced practitioner may be a very different experience.

It is recommended that you make an application for mini-pupillage at least 2 months before your intended period of mini-pupillage.

Pupillage

Pupils undertaking formal pupillage to become a barrister are expected to complete assigned tasks competently and professionally. Intended pupils should study and observe the relevant statutory and regulatory requirements carefully.

For more information, visit the Bar Association website here. You should plan well ahead of the commencement of pupillage and apply preferably 12 months (and in any event not less than 3 months) in advance.

How to Apply

All applications and enquiries MUST be made by a cover letter attaching a résumé. Since Harcourt Chambers has not implemented any unified application procedure, the cover letter should be directly addressed to an individual barrister by post or by email. Applications addressed generally to the Chambers without specifying a particular recipient will usually be disregarded.
